Authorities in Zanzibar, Tanzania, are investigating the death of U.S. influencer Ashly Robinson, with her fiance, crypto fund manager Joe McCann, reportedly being questioned as part of the inquiry.

Robinson, 31, died on April 9 after being found unresponsive at a resort on the island, according to statements from local police cited by CNBC and other media outlets. She had been traveling with McCann, founder of crypto investment firm Asymmetric Financial.

Police reportedly said the couple had argued during the trip and were staying in separate rooms before Robinson was found and taken to hospital, where she later died.

Authorities have publicly stated that she died by suicide following what they described as a “misunderstanding,” while also confirming the case remains under investigation.

Robinson’s family has challenged that account. Her sister said Robinson appeared happy in the days leading up to her death and had recently celebrated her birthday and engagement.

Police have reportedly asked McCann to remain in the country while forensic results are pending. He has not been charged with any crime. His passport has been withheld as part of the ongoing investigation, according to CNBC.

McCann is known in crypto markets as the founder of Asymmetric, a hedge fund and venture firm focused on digital assets. His liquid fund arm was wound down late last year following reported losses, placing him among a group of high-profile managers navigating a volatile period for the sector.

Authorities have not indicated that digital assets played any role in Robinson’s death.
